Three bookshops win German bookstore prize

A total of 108 bookstores across Germany have been chosen as winners. Two are from Halle and one is from Quedlinburg. The prize amount is still uncertain.

- Three bookshops win German bookstore prize

This year, three bookstores from Saxony-Anhalt have been honored with the German Bookstore Prize. The winners this year, according to the federal government, are the bookstore in the Franckesche Stiftungen in Halle, the bookstore Jacobi & Müller in Halle, and the antiquarian bookstore Gebecke in Quedlinburg.

Out of 442 applications, a jury selected 108 bookstores from across Germany for the prize. At the official award ceremony on September 8 in Frankfurt (Oder), the bookstores will learn in which category they have been honored. There are prize categories for 7,000 euros, 15,000 euros, and 25,000 euros.

Bookstores are indispensable cultural spaces and social hubs for encounters, said Culture Minister Claudia Roth (Greens). "Especially in rural areas, they make an important contribution to local cultural life." The federal government, according to its own statements, honors bookstores with this prize that have made a significant contribution to the societal importance of the cultural good of books and to local cultural life. A total of one million euros is available for the German Bookstore Prize.
