- Thousands of years old bones discovered on a sports field in Bremen
Ahead of construction work on a sports field in Bremen, archaeologists have discovered bones thousands of years old, ceramic discs, and fire pits. Initial findings suggest that the artifacts date back to the Bronze and early Iron Ages, some up to three thousand years old. "We will likely find more here, as this is a known site since the 1930s," said Matthias Antkowiak of the State Archaeology in Bremen. The latest find is believed to be a Bronze Age cemetery with urn burials and a later Iron Age settlement.
The site is set to host new football pitches and a 400-meter long plastic running track, according to the Bremen Interior Ministry. Construction is scheduled to begin on Monday and will not be affected by the archaeological findings. "We will continue to monitor this," said Antkowiak.
The area in Bremen's Blumenthal district has been inhabited since the Neolithic period. Archaeologists have repeatedly found remains of settlements here. "There are about 4,000 known sites in Bremen," said Antkowiak. Further analysis will determine if the discoveries are indeed graves.
The excavation site in Bremen's Blumenthal district, which has been a focus of archaeological interest since the 1930s, is rich in historical artifacts, spanning from the Neolithic period to the Bronze and early Iron Ages. Despite the upcoming construction of modern sports facilities, the archaeologists plan to continue monitoring the site to uncover more historical treasures from these periods.
