Tradition - Thousands of visitors come to the start of Spreewaldweihnacht

Smoked fish, barge rides and the gift child: according to the organizers, the Spreewald Christmas attracted around 3,000 visitors to the opening event. Visitors were able to stroll around the Christmas market and sample delicious treats at the Great Spreewald Harbour in Lübbenau and travel to the Lehde Open-Air Museum on almost 60 barges complete with woollen blankets. There, the "Bescherkind" - the Sorbian Christ Child - and the gift bringer Rumpodich - the Ruprecht - were waiting to give presents and bless the guests.

The head of the Lübbenau and surrounding area boat ferry cooperative, Steffen Franke, was satisfied. Around 3000 visitors came in "desirable Christmas winter weather", said Franke. Jenny Linke, spokesperson for the Spreewald Museum in Lübbenau, said that the Spreewald Christmas was very well attended.

The Spreewaldweihnacht is offered on the first and second weekends of Advent. The combined ticket for the boat trip and a visit to the Lehde Open-Air Museum is already fully booked. However, visitors can still visit the museum with a day ticket, said Linke.
