President Erdogan had spoken on Wednesday of a "heinous attack" on his "brother" Hanija. Erdogan refers to the Islamist Hamas as a "liberation organization".

Following the killing of Hezbollah military chief Fuad Schukr in Beirut, to which the Israeli military officially admitted, Hanija was killed in Tehran on Wednesday. Israel has not commented on his killing, but Iran holds the country responsible.

Since the unprecedented major attack by the Islamist Hamas on October 7, during which Israeli reports say 1197 people were killed, Israel has been carrying out massive strikes against targets in the Gaza Strip. According to Hamas, which cannot be independently verified, more than 39,550 people have been killed so far. It is not specified whether these are civilians or Hamas fighters.

The rally against Israel's actions in the Gaza Strip was attended by many supporters of Hanija on Friday. The Hamas leaders, including Hanija, often address their supporters at such rallies, condemning the Israeli actions and reiterating their commitment to the cause.
