Customs - Thousands of letters have already arrived at the Christmas post office

Two weeks after the launch of the Himmelsthür Christmas Post Office, thousands of letters from children have already arrived. The employees have already answered 9340 letters from girls and boys from all over the world, said Jens Osterwald. The postal worker is the coordinator of the Christmas post office. The children often want smartphones, games consoles or pets. But non-material things such as health and peace are also on the wish lists, said Osterwald.

Himmelsthür is a district of Hildesheim. However, for some years now, the Himmelsthür Christmas post office team has no longer been meeting in Hildesheim, but in the Pattensen mail center in the Hanover region. In addition to postal workers, the team also includes volunteers.

There are a total of seven Christmas post offices in Germany, three of which are located in Lower Saxony. In addition to Himmelsthür, these are Himmelpforten in the district of Stade and Nikolausdorf, part of the municipality of Garrel in the district of Cloppenburg.
