Thousands of complaints against police - majority unfounded

When the police come and keep order, some of those affected by the measures feel unfairly treated. However, only a few of the complaints are justified, according to a new report by the Ministry of the Interior.

Thousands of complaints against police - majority unfounded

Thousands of complaints were received against the police last year. However, the majority of these were unfounded, according to a "Police Complaints Report" published by the Ministry of the Interior. For example, people often complained that operations were not lawful.

The total number of 4664 complaints - 700 more than in 2021 - may be distorted, as cases from the previous year were also included in the statistics due to new software, according to the report. In fact, however, the percentage of unfounded complaints has remained fairly constant since 2018. In the current report, it is 74 percent.

In relation to the total number of police operations - around 5.15 million in 2022 - the number of complaints (whether justified or not) is manageable, according to the Ministry of the Interior. Many of the complainants questioned the legality of deployments. Of these 1417 cases, for example, 60 complaints turned out to be partially justified and 47 justified. In 97 cases, it was not possible to clarify the matter.

The "Police Complaints Report" revealed that a significant number of the 4664 complaints received against the police last year were unfounded. Despite the increase in complaints, the percentage of unfounded cases has remained relatively stable at 74%, as stated in the report.
