Pilgrimage - Thousands of believers make a pilgrimage from Osnabrück to Telgte
Several Thousands of Pilgrims have run from Osnabrück to Telgte. The believers were reportedly in Telgte around 3:30 PM, said Martin Schomaker, Dean of the St.-Johann-Parish in Osnabrück. "We value that there were approximately 5,000 female and male participants in total," he said. The pilgrimage, which is over 45 kilometers long, took place in Osnabrück for the 172nd time this year. The motto for this year was "Come with us."
For the entrance into Telgte, Bishop Felix Genn of Münster and the former Bishop of Osnabrück, Franz-Josef Bode, were ready to welcome the believers, said Schomaker. On Sunday morning, the pilgrims will return the way to Osnabrück. They are expected in Georgsmarienhütte in the evening.
The first pilgrims had already been on their feet since early morning. Two Catholic churches in Osnabrück held pilgrim masses as early as 1:30 AM. The departure was at 3:00 AM in the Osnabrück city center. More and more believers joined in, said Schomaker, who accompanied the pilgrimage as a spiritual leader.
The weather was ideal for the pilgrims at first, but clouds gathered in the afternoon. It had rained a little just before Telgte, said Schomaker. However, this did not dampen the good mood. Singing and praying, the believers ran through the southern part of Osnabrück and the eastern part of Münsterland towards Telgte, the traditional pilgrimage site just a few kilometers before Münster.
Many pilgrims also participated in the parallel bicycle pilgrimage, said Schomaker. "These are often people who can no longer walk well but still want to participate in the pilgrimage."
The pilgrimage procession between Osnabrück and Telgte has been taking place annually since 1852. The event had to be canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the Corona pandemic.
