Those arrested for war crimes in Syria are remanded in custody
Men are alleged to have participated in the killing and attempted killing of civilians on behalf of the Syrian ruling authority of Bashar al-Assad in the year 2012. They are accused of involvement in the violent suppression of a demonstration in a Damascus neighborhood, where at least six people were killed.
Four of the suspects are also charged with torture. Another serious accusation against one of the men is for kidnapping resulting in death and war crimes against property.
Four of the alleged war criminals are said to have been part of a militia, acting on behalf of the Syrian regime, that oppressed the population during the Syrian civil war. One of the suspects is reportedly an employee of the Syrian intelligence services. The suspects, along with others, are alleged to have shot at demonstrators during the violent suppression of the demonstration.
Among those arrested in Germany are stateless Syrian Palestinians Jihad A., Mahmoud A., Sameer S., Wael S., and Syrian national Mazhar J. - the arrests of the four suspects in Germany coincided with the detention of three other alleged Syrian war criminals in Sweden.
The militia Free Palestine Movement, to which the four suspects arrested in Germany and the three in Sweden are attributed, is said to have exercised control over the predominantly Palestinian neighborhood of Al-Jarmuk from around 2011. In addition to the suppression of the demonstration, several suspects are accused of repeatedly physically assaulting civilians and ordering arrests in this area.
Mahmoud A. is alleged, according to the Federal Prosecutor's Office, to have arrested three people in 2013, who were later executed in a planned mass execution of at least 41 civilians.
