Regional league - Thomas Schaaf works for regional league club VfB Oldenburg
The former Bundesliga coach Thomas Schaaf will be advising the regional soccer league club VfB Oldenburg with immediate effect. The club made the announcement on Wednesday. "We are delighted to be able to shape the future of VfB Oldenburg with the support of an expert like Thomas Schaaf," VfB Supervisory Board Chairman Stefan Könner was quoted as saying. Above all, the club wants to benefit from the 62-year-old's experience. He celebrated great success as a coach with Werder Bremen.
Schaaf, who has been working for the European soccer association Uefa since 2011, is expected to help the North Germans less with day-to-day business and instead focus on the "strategic development of VfB". "VfB has developed positively in recent years and if I can now play a small part in shaping its further development, I'm happy to do so," said Schaaf.
In the summer, the club was relegated back to the Regionalliga Nord after a year in the 3rd division. Schaaf had taken over as Werder coach in 1999 four match days before the end of the season and saved the club from relegation. A successful era then began: in just under 14 years, he brought the club the German championship in 2004 and won the DFB Cup three times.
In 2021, he replaced Florian Kohfeldt as Werder coach on the last matchday of the season, but he was unable to prevent relegation. Between 2014 and 2016, he also coached Eintracht Frankfurt and Hannover 96.
