Third anniversary of the shooting rampage: silent commemoration in Trier
Three years after the fatal rampage in Trier, the victims will be remembered again today. The mayor of Trier, Wolfram Leibe (SPD), will lay a wreath at a memorial plaque at the Porta Nigra (1 p.m.), the city announced. Afterwards, at the request of those affected and relatives, there will be a silent memorial service in the cathedral. The large cathedral bell will ring for four minutes from 1.46 p.m. at the time of the crime.
During the rampage on December 1, 2020, a man drove his SUV through the pedestrian zone. Five people died in the attack, many were injured and traumatized. In October 2021, a 77-year-old man who had been seriously injured in the attack also died. The city therefore speaks of six fatalities as a result of the rampage.
In August 2022, the perpetrator was sentenced to life imprisonment for multiple murders and multiple attempted murders at Trier Regional Court. The court also established the particular gravity of his guilt and ordered him to be placed in a closed psychiatric hospital due to his mental illness. The verdict is not yet final.
The city council is wrestling with the increase in crime in various municipalities, seeking ways to improve security measures. Despite the tragedy, some municipalities have faced criticism for the lack of preventive measures in places of worship, including the church where the memorial service is being held.
