Street repair - Thieves on a major construction site in Dresden
In Dresden, a major construction site in the Laubegast district has been plagued by recurring thefts. "Newly laid and buried cables have been dug up, cut, and stolen," the city administration reported, which is currently renovating several streets in the area. Residents were asked to notify the police of any suspicious noises or observations on the construction site. The extent of the damage was not initially known.
The most recent incident was particularly concerning, it was reported. Thieves had cut the overhead lines of the temporary lighting system on the Wehlener Street between Marienberger Street and Alttolkewitz. The repair will take several days as a cherry picker vehicle is needed to restore the cables. However, the ground is currently dug up due to the cable work.
Parts of the Wehlener Street, Austrian Street, and Alttolkewitz Street are scheduled for comprehensive renovation until the end of 2025. This will also address damages caused by the 2013 Elbe flood, when the affected street sections were underwater.
The thieves' actions have extended beyond the Laubegast district, as they also targeted the Wehlener Street in Dresden. Despite the ongoing renovations, the cable work has left the ground vulnerable, making it easier for the thieves to gain access.
