Music - Thielemann bids farewell to Dresden
Christian Thielemann bids farewell as Chief Conductor of the Staatskapelle Dresden with a monumental work - Gustav Mahler's 8th Symphony. "The Symphony of a Thousand" will resound at the Semperoper next Sunday and the two following days. The orchestra announced this. Thielemann (65) can build on a highly distinguished soloist ensemble for this. Among others, the soprano Camilla Nylund, mezzo-soprano Christa Mayer, and bass Georg Zeppenfeld belong to it. Thielemann began his tenure at the Sächsische Staatskapelle with the start of the 2012/2013 season. In the future, he will work as Generalmusikdirektor of the Staatsoper unter den Linden in Berlin.
Mahler's 8th Symphony is an extraordinary work and requires a large orchestra. "It is the greatest thing I have done. Imagine the universe beginning to resonate," he himself said about the symphony. At the Staatskapelle Dresden, it was last performed on the program in 1932 - with Fritz Busch conducting. In addition to the Chor der Sächsischen Staatsoper, the Chor des Bayerischen Rundfunks, the Kinderchor der Semperoper, and the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester are involved in the performance.
