The Advent season is all about indulgence. This includes not only Christmas cookies and sumptuous festive food, but also drinks. Mulled wine, punch and hot chocolate are popular classics at the Christmas market and are very popular with Germans in December, as a representative online survey by market research company Appinio shows.

The majority find it hard to hold back before Christmas

According to the survey, sweet drinks are particularly popular in the run-up to Christmas: 56% of Germans drink more sweet drinks during Advent than in any other month of the year. However, the majority are not concerned about the sugar consumption that goes hand in hand with this. 44 percent even admit to losing track of the amount of sweet drinks they drink over the Christmas period. In general, half of those surveyed find it almost impossible to hold back on their sweet tooth during the Christmas period.

"Popular winter drinks should be enjoyed in moderation, as often just one of these drinks exceeds the recommended daily sugar intake," says Siena Cid, nutritionist at Air up. The company, which claims to sell the "world's first fragrance-based drinking system" ("Air up" in the stern test), commissioned the study. In November, 1000 people each from Germany, Italy and the Netherlands and 2000 people from the USA took part.

Although almost half of those surveyed in Germany considered the amount of sugar contained in mulled wine to be too high, in reality the majority do not think about the nutritional values. Accordingly, most people find it difficult to keep their New Year's resolutions, which all too often revolve around healthier eating. Almost half of those surveyed stated that they fail to implement such resolutions. "Completely neglecting sugar consumption over the Christmas period is counterproductive," says nutritionist Siena Cid.

This does not mean that you have to give up completely. Rather, smaller tricks can help to avoid excessive sugar consumption. For example, you can replace one or two sweet drinks with herbal teas. Sufficient water, balanced meals and mindful eating with conscious enjoyment can also help to stabilize blood sugar levels and avoid cravings.
