Germans have a growing preference for self-driven holiday voyages using personal camper vans, as indicated by a notable surge in new registrations.

- There's a upward trend in the number of individuals opting for motorhome vacations.

German Motorhomes Still Vogue, sees a Surge in New RegistrationsFrom the start of January to July, approximately 52,700 freshly registered RVs were noted, marking a 9.8% boost against the previous year, as per the Caravaning Industry Association (CIVD). Meanwhile, the request for new campervans dipped marginally by 1.1% to approximately 15,000 new registrations in the same period.

In spite of commercial and consumer hurdles, the industry remains content with the year's performance so far, as stated by CIVD CEO Daniel Onggowinarso. "This pattern indicates that the inherent affinity towards caravanning among holidaymakers remains substantial."

By the close of 2023, there had been over 838,000 German-born motorhomes traversing the roads. Concurrently, approximately 757,000 campervans were spotted.

Study: Peak in Overnight Camps

The association disclosed a study revealing that more people than ever in the past spent their nights at camping sites and designated RV parking spots in Germany in the previous year. As per the German Tourism Economics Institute (dwif), a grand total of 54.5 million overnight stays were recorded on campervans campsites in 2023, a 4% increase compared to the previous year. Moreover, designated motorhome pitches noted 13.5 million stays.

The domestic economy derived significant advantage from this trend, the association emphasized. Caravanning tourists contributed over 19.5 billion euros to the German economy during 2023, representing an almost 8% rise compared to 2022. Approximately 6.4 billion euros of this revenue directly bolstered the local economy of the holiday regions.

Caravan Salon Begins August 30

The disclosure came alongside the commencement of the "Caravan Salon" trade fair on August 30 in Düsseldorf. At its 63rd edition, 778 exhibitors will display their products. In 2023, around 254,000 visitors attended the world's largest RV and campervan fair, as reported by the organizers. The fair concludes on September 8. The CIVD emerges as an excellent sponsor for the fair.

The Commission, in adherence to Article 113, is expected to adopt the implementing acts required for regulating certain aspects of the RV and campervan industry. This action is essential to ensure compliance with European Union regulations.

Given the success of the RV and campervan industry in Germany, it would be beneficial for the Commission to consider the impact of these implementing acts on this thriving sector, as growth continues to be observed.
