East Saxony - Theater, dance and film at Lausitz Festival 2024
Claus Peymann directs Kafka and Götz Schubert performs in "Othello" - these are two of the 22 program points of this year's Lausitz Festival in Ostsachsen. According to the announcement of the intendancy, William Shakespeare's masterpiece in Marcel Kohler's direction and his only surviving literary manuscript "The Foreigners" will be performed on August 25 at a former glass factory in Weißwasser. In it, we will experience the complex relationships with the Other, said Festival Chief Daniel Kühnel.
The night before, according to reports, Beethoven's 9th Symphony, Fourth Movement with the "Ode to Joy" will sound under the title "Joyful Sparks of Lausitz" in the Görlitzer Altstadt. Its melody has been the official European anthem since 1985. With "its timeless call for universal brotherhood," it is "a powerful symbol for community and solidarity," said Kühnel. During the performance by the New Lausitz Philharmonic Orchestra with international soloists and a specially formed choir, singing along is encouraged.
Among the festival highlights are a scenic reading of the Czech author Radka Denemarkova in the Bautzen Burgtheater and a concert by the Venezuelan pianist Gabriela Montero. In the New Castle in Bad Muskau, under the title "The Lost Mirrors," photography and painting are exhibited - including by Andreas Gursky.
The fifth edition of the European art festival under the motto "Other Selves" offers a total of around 60 events from August 24 to September 14 at special locations in Südbrandenburg and Ostsachsen - from classical concerts to jazz, theater, dance, film, literature, song evenings to philosophical conversations.
