In Hamburg, the signs of the spring economic recovery are starting to show, though a bit later than expected: The number of individuals who found a new job has slightly increased. The amount of unemployed people in Hamburg in May, compared to April, has dropped by roughly 700 to approximately 86,766. The unemployment rate has also decreased by 0.2 percentage points, now standing at 7.8 percent, according to the Hamburg branch of the Federal Employment Agency. In comparison, last year it was at 7.2 percent. The Federal Employment Agency compiled their statistics using data up to May 15th.

Generally, the job market in Hamburg remains fairly steady. There aren't any significant fluctuations, as noted. "We could see this coming in the previous months: The spring economic recovery is underway, but it's running a little behind schedule," said Sönke Fock, the head of management for the Hamburg Employment Agency. While more individuals have jobs, the growth is modest. "This was certainly to be anticipated, given the current circumstances, but it's still a positive sign that businesses are still expanding their workforce and keeping on their employees," Fock added.

77 long-term jobless find employment

The number of long-term unemployed, who make up roughly 30 percent of the people registered unemployed, has dropped by 77 individuals to 26,600. At the same time, businesses are still seeking out skilled workers. The need for skilled workers remains a key concern, as stated.

Most individuals got employed by companies in the processing sector in May: The employment rate was highest in this category. Construction companies in Hamburg have hired over 400 more people this month compared to the previous one. This is the maximum number of new hires compared to other sectors.

Almost 10,000 people from Ukraine have employment

Ukrainians continue to work in Hamburg. As per the Hamburg Employment Agency, there are currently 15,920 economically active Ukrainians and Ukrainians registered with the agency, which is 66 more than the previous month. Around 9,800 of them have secured a job. This signifies that less than half of the Ukrainians residing in Hamburg are unemployed, their share of the total unemployment rate in the city is 7.0 percent.
