- The Wedel power plant should continue operating within the electrical grid for an extended period.
The Wedel power plant won't switch to standby mode as expected by the end of 2025, according to Christian Heine, spokesperson for Hamburg Energy Works' management. This hold-up is due to setbacks in the construction of the new energy park Hafen, which is designed to replace the outdated coal-fired power plant. "Currently, we're experiencing a four-month construction delay," Heine shared with dpa. Despite this, he confirmed, "Our timeline for starting operation by the end of 2025 remains unchanged." Since these delays mean that taking over heat supply during the current 2025/2026 heating season is no longer an option, the team will first prioritize ensuring the smooth operation of the new facility. "Once that's sorted, we'll shift the Wedel power plant into standby mode."
The construction issues with the new energy park Hafen have led to a four-month delay, affecting the planned switch to standby mode for the Wedel power plant. Despite the setbacks, Hamburg Energy Works hopes to operate the new energy park by the end of 2025, as initially planned for the Wedel power plant.
