Following some issues with the state electoral commission's online presence during the recent municipal elections, there are plans to enhance the IT system in the near future. Before the upcoming European elections, the corresponding software will undergo optimization to ensure the website remains available without any glitches, as per a representative of the state electoral commission. Additionally, upgrades to the hardware may also be made if required. The funds needed for these improvements are currently available.

Long loading times

On May 26th, during the first round of the Thuringian municipal elections, the state electoral commission's website was inaccessible or took a considerable amount of time to load. This website showcases the partial and final results of the vote counting. Their website had previously been under strain, especially during previous elections. The European election is on June 9th, coinciding with the second round of the municipal elections, which will feature several runoff elections for district council and mayoral positions.

Record-breaking access numbers

According to the state electoral commission's spokesperson, the website saw an "excessively high" number of access attempts on the day of the first municipal election round. The simultaneous occurrence of six separate elections contributed to this increase, with district councils, county councils, mayors, municipal councils, and town councils, as well as village councils and municipal councilors all being newly elected. The last time this many municipal elections occurred at the same time was back in 1994. Additionally, the overall interest in the election results has significantly increased due to the current political climate.

Internal systems stable

Following the slow response of the state electoral commission's website on election night, the state electoral commission and the Thuringian State Computing Center tried to address the IT issues, resulting in a brief, unforeseen unavailability of the website for some users. The website is managed by the State Computing Center. However, the problems were limited to the presentation of the results. "The internal systems of the state electoral commission for recording and calculating the election results operated without any issues," mentioned the representative.

A comprehensive overhaul of the results website for the state electoral commission is planned over the long term, with the required funding being sought for the preparation of the state budget in 2025. #[#]
