Health Ministry - The water quality in northern waters and seas is outstanding.

Prior to the start of summer swimming, the Health Ministry in Schleswig-Holstein reports that the water quality is "remarkably good." Testing of water samples taken from lakes and oceans shows bathers can enjoy without worry, as per their announcement in Kiel on a Friday. Around 330 samples were inspected, with coliform bacteria and enterococci levels being below acceptable measures.

Schleswig-Holstein boasts numerous options for healthy open-air bathing due to its situation nestled between the oceans, lakes, and rivers. The positive test results from last year support this claim. Nevertheless, four bathing spots in Stohl, Friedrichskoog, Schleimünde, and Hasselfelde are now closed due to maintenance work or storm damage. The beach at Schilksee plans to reopen on June 7th.

The task of regulating water quality and addressing sanitation procedures on site falls upon the health authorities of the districts and free Hanseatic cities, collaborating with municipalities. This includes not only the collection and analysis of water samples, but also on-site visits to check for contamination and algae flourishing. Over the previous bathing season in 2023, nearly 93% of all Schleswig-Holstein swimming areas garnered the top classification of "excellent," while approximately 6% received a "good" rating, and about 1% received a "satisfactory" or "unrated" classification.
