Dresden is set to witness the establishment of a fresh vocational education center focused on electronics, a move by the city and the Free State aiming to meet the escalating necessity for skilled laborers in the chip manufacturing sector in Saxony. The forthcoming edifice, planned to be operationable by 2028-2029, carries a total price tag of 127.5 million euros.

As per Saxony's Minister President Michael Kretschmer (CDU), this is an "important investment in our region's future." Dresden boasts the position of Europe's prime microelectronics hub, with Silicon Saxony showing steady growth.

The upcoming education center will significantly boost the training capacity in the promising area of electronics, benefiting not just major semiconductor manufacturers but also mid-sized companies as well.

Dresden's modern training hub in the making

For Saxony's Minister of Culture Christian Piwarz (CDU), the chip factories act as the "driving force behind Silicon Saxony," significantly for microtechnologists and mechatronics engineers. The new vocational education center is set to offer a modern training ground for the workforce of the upcoming era.

Dresden's Mayor Dirk Hilbert (FDP) emphasized the city's established innovative educational programs and amenities, stating that the new center would open up training prospects for upcoming generations in sectors such as microtechnology, mechatronics, IT systems electronics, and electrical engineering.

Last week saw the groundbreaking ceremony for the new factory of the Taiwanese company TSMC, which aims to manufacture chips, primarily for the automotive industry, alongside three partners. With this move, the world's largest silicon microelectronics contract manufacturer arrives in Europe, specifically in northern Dresden, turning the region into a notable hub for industry heavyweights like Infineon and Bosch, who are expanding their facilities.

The establishment of the new vocational education center will cater to the demand for skilled laborers in electronics, serving as an "other" vital resource alongside the existing semiconductor manufacturers and expanding facilities of industry giants. This diverse skill set development will foster a versatile workforce, providing opportunities for both large and mid-sized companies in the region.

Integrating the new education center into Dresden's existing innovative educational programs and amenities will create a comprehensive ecosystem, ensuring that the city remains at the forefront of technological advancements and maintains its position as a significant hub for various sectors such as microtechnology, mechatronics, IT systems electronics, and electrical engineering, with "other" emerging fields potentially benefiting from this investment.
