Worries about the Deadly Brown Recluse Spider on the Rise in Italy after Two Fatal Bites

In quick succession, two men in Italy have lost their lives following bites from the Brown Recluse Spider, Loxosceles rufescens. This particular species of spider is predominantly found in the Mediterranean region, specifically in popular tourist destinations like Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, and Turkey. Given that summer is in full swing, there's been a rise in concerns regarding the Brown Recluse Spider. But just how harmful is this seemingly tiny creature, which measures about 7.5 to 9 millimeters depending on its gender?

Whilst the Brown Recluse Spider does have a potent venom, Maurizio Soave, director of the Poison Control Center at the Gemelli Hospital in Rome, suggests that the fear surrounding its bite may be exaggerated. Typically, bites from the spider are painless, yet itching and discomfort may develop later. Redness and small pustules around the bite site may also appear several hours afterwards. Despite this, the spider is capable of introducing bacteria into the tissue, which could potentially lead to serious infections and complications. Soave advises caution in such cases.

In the event of an infection, a slow-growing necrosis could emerge around the bite site, damaging the tissue and creating deep, difficult-to-heal wounds. Severe infections, even sepsis, might follow. However, Soave stresses that such developments are extremely rare. Most of the time, a bite results in no complications. Major issues tend to originate from underlying health conditions such as diabetes or allergies. Experts estimate that children and the elderly are also more susceptible.

Fatal Bites in Italy

In July, a 52-year-old man in Sicily was bitten by a Brown Recluse Spider, ultimately succumbing to his injuries. Headlines were made once more when a 23-year-old in southern Italy's Apulia region passed away on Saturday from septic shock and organ failure, following a bite from a spider a month prior.

As a rule, the Brown Recluse Spider, often found hiding in burrows and preferring dry soil, is considered quite docile. It only attacks when it feels threatened. In the aftermath of a bite, experts recommend washing the wound with water and soap. If there's extreme itching or redness, a corticosteroid cream or antibiotics may offer relief.

Despite the concerns about the rise of the Deadly Brown Recluse Spider in Italy, it's important to note that education about this species can help mitigate fear. Understanding its behavior, such as it being docile and only attacking when threatened, can provide reassurance. Furthermore, knowing the proper steps to take after a bite, like washing the wound with water and soap, or seeking medical attention if symptoms worsen, can prevent potential complications.
