- The trial of a mutilated body begins at the county courthouse
Following the discovery of human remains in a canal near Nordhorn, a man and a woman are due to appear in court in Osnabrück today (from 9:00 AM). A 55-year-old Ukrainian man is accused of manslaughter, with his 49-year-old partner charged as an accomplice.
Prosecutors allege that in February last year, the man struck a 51-year-old Latvian man repeatedly with a bottle, causing fatal injuries. Along with his partner, he is said to have dismembered the body and packed it into bags. On the night of February 16th, the defendant is accused of disposing of the bags in the Ems-Vechte Canal near Nordhorn.
The motive for the crime is believed to have been a dispute between the two men, with the defendant suspecting the victim of harassing his partner. The trial, scheduled for November, is expected to last for ten days.
The initial discovery of human remains in a canal sparked a criminal investigation, leading to charges of manslaughter and accomplice for the accused individuals. As alleged by prosecutors, the defendant used a bottle to inflict fatal injuries on another man in February, and then, with his partner, dismembered the body and disposed of it in the Ems-Vechte Canal.
