- The States in question have yet to respond to the Commission's inquiry.
Following the deadly Islamist attack in Solingen with three victims, Berlin's Interior Senator Iris Spranger (SPD) has proposed more knife and weapon-restricted zones, enhanced surveillance, and harsher expulsions of criminals. "We need more knife and weapon-restricted zones. They send a strong message to potential wrongdoers and broaden the police's intervention options," Spranger shared with the German Press Agency.
The Berlin Senate will establish these zones through decrees in areas where severe crimes frequently happen, such as in the Kreuzberg Wrangelkiez. "These areas are not limited to just this. We're discussing this with the Berlin Police," Spranger stated. The Security and Public Order Act has been undergoing amendments for some time now.
Spranger also highlighted: "We'll broaden video surveillance in crime-prone regions and integrate it with artificial intelligence. We'll examine if this can be used to apprehend criminals."
Germany can no longer afford to postpone the direct expulsions of criminals to Afghanistan and Syria. Furthermore, border checks should be strengthened on a case-by-case basis.
The proposal for more knife and weapon-restricted zones aims to deter potential criminals in areas known for frequent severe crimes, such as Kreuzberg Wrangelkiez. Enhancing video surveillance with artificial intelligence in crime-prone regions could potentially aid in apprehending criminals.
