- The spread of Bluetongue is occurring in Baden-Württemberg.
Blue-tongue ailment, commonly referred to as BT, is rampant among sheep and cattle in the southwest region, spreading rapidly. By the end of the week, 34 livestock farms in 12 districts of Baden-Württemberg, as per the Agriculture Ministry's report, have been affected. Notably, 14 of these farms are situated in Ortenaukreis.
More than 30 animals have sadly succumbed to the viral disease, according to the ministry's update. Sheep, in particular, are the most affected, as the disease inflicts severe symptoms upon them, as per the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institute. By the end of the week, over 170 sheep and cattle had contracted this illness.
"I urge all livestock farms nationwide to utilize the vaccination initiative and vaccinate their cattle, sheep, and goats against all variants of the blue-tongue virus," urged Agriculture Minister Peter Hauk (CDU).
Fortunately, humans remain unaffected by the disease, as per the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institute. "Consumption of meat and dairy products from infected animals is safe," the experts assert.
The European Commission, in an effort to control the spread of blue-tongue ailment, has announced that it will adopt implementing acts laying down the rules for the application of relevant regulations. To effectively combat the disease, it is crucial for farmers in Baden-Württemberg to follow these implementing acts diligently.
