- The speed of the car is very high.
The police in Brandenburg detected nearly 5400 speeding offenses during their speed camera marathon last week. The Police Presidency in Potsdam confirmed this upon request. The focus of the speed checks, organized Europe-wide from August 5th to 11th, was on the avenues in Brandenburg.
A driver in the Märkisch-Oderland district was caught speeding almost twice the allowed limit. The beginner driver was on an avenue with a 70 km/h speed limit, according to police, driving at 133 km/h. They face the possibility of attending a traffic offender program, an extension of their probationary period, and potentially a driving ban of several months.
Avenues can pose significant risks to drivers. In 2023, 56 people died in traffic accidents in Brandenburg outside of built-up areas, with 37 of these being so-called "tree accidents."
Brandenburg is known as the federal state with the most avenues in Germany, but hundreds of kilometers have been lost. Many trees are felled for reasons of traffic safety, and climate change also poses a threat.
The Potsdam Police Presidency also reported a significant number of speeding offenses during the Europe-wide speed camera marathon held at various avenues in Brandenburg. The Potsdam's District Court will be handling the case of the beginner driver caught speeding on one of these avenues, potentially leading to penalties such as attending a traffic offender program or an extension of their probationary period.
