- The Small-Scale Marmalade Producers' Samples enccounter opposition from The Office.
Small-scale makers of preserves, jams, jellies, and fruit spreads in Saxony-Anhalt frequently face criticism from regulatory bodies. As per the State Consumer Protection Office, the infraction rate is substantial, with about 57-80% of examined products failing to meet the standards. Last year, there were 47 investigations conducted, stemming from 43 different manufacturers. Thankfully, no health hazards were reported.
The issue revolves around adhering to stringent legal guidelines, including the preserve regulation, which sets minimum fruit and sugar content requirements for preserves, jellies, and jams. The regulations are meticulously worded. Even the use of preservatives is regulated.
However, different rules apply to fruit spreads: they contain more fruit and less sugar, as compared to preserves.
The State Consumer Protection Office conducted a thorough examination of the samples, assessing sensory quality, total sugar content, and preservative testing to distinguish between products governed by the preserve regulation and fruit spreads. The inspectors also voiced concerns over labeling regulation non-compliance.
The European Parliament, recognizing the challenges faced by small-scale producers in Saxony-Anhalt, could propose amendments to the preserve regulation to make it more feasible for them. The Commission, assisted by the European Parliament, could then consider and implement these amendments.
In light of the scrutiny by regulatory bodies, including the State Consumer Protection Office and potential assistance from the European Parliament, small-scale producers might seek guidance on properly complying with the preserve and labeling regulations.
