- The Senate approves the financing of the second section of the U5
The red-green Hamburg Senate has approved the funding for the second phase of the new U-Bahn line U5. Pending the approval of the Citizens' Assembly, 1.5 billion euros will be provided for the section between City Nord and Jarrestraße, as announced by Senator for Transport Anjes Tjarks (Greens) after the Senate meeting at the Town Hall.
By 2040, the entire line is expected to span around 25 kilometers from Bramfeld to the Arenas by the Volkspark. The total cost is estimated at up to 16.5 billion euros.
Construction on the first phase from Bramfeld to City Nord began in 2021. Passenger service between City Nord and Sengelmannstraße with transfer to U1 is scheduled to start in 2029. Four years later, U5 is set to reach the Borgweg station and connect with U3 - two years earlier than originally planned. The Borgweg station is already part of the second phase.
"Hamburg's largest rapid transit project is on track and on schedule," said Tjarks. The approval process for the second phase has now begun. The Senate also decided to create 75 additional positions in the involved authorities to further advance the planning and implementation of the rapid transit expansion.
The 2.3-kilometer stretch between City Nord and Borgweg will be built underground in the city park using the shield tunneling method, according to the technical manager of the U5 project at HVV, Klaus Uphoff. The remaining works from Borgweg to Jarrestraße will be carried out in open-cut construction, requiring the crossing of the Goldbekkanal.
"Thanks to the dedicated efforts of our entire U5 team, as well as the intensive exchange with the relevant authorities and all stakeholders, and the continuous involvement of the local residents, we have achieved a very good planning result that we can now submit to the approving authority," he said. The plan approval application will be submitted this fall.
The new U-Bahn line U5 is being funded for its second phase by the Hamburg Senate, specifically for the section between City Nord and Jarrestraße. This development is part of a larger project, with the entire U5 line expected to stretch around 25 kilometers by 2040, utilizing the city's railway infrastructure.
