Extraction of rock salt - The salt plant in Bernburg is set to undergo expansion.
Bernburg's salt works are planned for an expansion. The mining area will be dug up in a northwestern direction, covering 3km by 5km. This move aims to create a long-term perspective for the salt mine. The operator has announced this news, mentioning that an environmental impact assessment is yet to be completed.
In Salzlandkreis district, the salt works are meant to commence in 2033. Dorothee Telaar, the Works Manager, assured that they will carry out exhaustive environmental impact studies and invite public participation to address the concerns of the locals.
The salt works in Bernburg initially began in 1913. However, it wasn't until 1921 that rock salt started being processed there. Currently, the mine extracts salt from a depth of 700 meters. Products manufactured at the plant include table salt, industrial and merchant rock salt, and winter road salt.
With close to 530 employees, both male and female, the works aim to continue providing employment opportunities for the community.
