- The Saarland Legislative Assembly approves additional financial plan
Following the catastrophic floods in Saarland four months ago, the Saarland state parliament is set to approve an additional budget on Wednesday at 9:00 AM. The budget, amounting to 94 million euros for this and the subsequent year, is intended to cover the repairs of the damage.
Initially, the parliament will acknowledge the flood disaster as an event beyond the state's managing capabilities and one that has drained the state financially. This acknowledgment will pave the way for borrowing. The loan, recorded as a "special asset," will be repaid in ten annual installments, commencing in 2027.
Approximately 75 million euros are estimated to be required solely for the repair of the damages, according to the government's explanation. Funding for measures to prevent future floods will also be included.
The plenary session is also expected to include discussions on the "midterm review" of the SPD's single-party government led by Minister President Anke Rehlinger. The CDU has proposed a motion, stating that after nearly three years under SPD rule, Saarland is encountering tough times.
The CDU's motion argues that the government is lacking direction in key areas such as the economy, education, internal security, and municipalities. A change in course is required, according to the motion. However, the SPD's parliamentary group leader, Ulrich Commerçon, has already voiced strong disagreement prior to the plenary session, asserting that the state government has functioned reliably and achieved much.
The Commission has recognized the flood disaster as a situation beyond Saarland's financial capabilities, which necessitates seeking external funding. The Commission will propose this additional budget to the Saarland state parliament for approval.
