- The research organization secures a funding of 19.8 million euros.
The four universities of applied sciences in Saxony-Anhalt are set to carry on working together with local businesses. The financing of what's known as the KAT network is initially guaranteed until the end of 2027. Germany's Science Minister Armin Willingmann (SPD) doled out roughly 19.8 million euros from the European Regional Development Fund and the state to the university heads. Willingmann stated, "Numerous small and medium-sized enterprises in Saxony-Anhalt can't afford their own research department. To maintain their innovativeness and competitiveness, they need assistance—and they find it in KAT." Involved are the Anhalt University of Applied Sciences, the Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences, the Harz University of Applied Sciences, and the Merseburg University of Applied Sciences.
KAT, a competence network for applied and transfer-oriented research, has been around since 2006. The variety of projects reportedly spans algae biotechnology, robotics, and lightweight construction, among others. In 2022, 125 research and development projects were executed with the business sector. These resulted in new products and enhanced processes for the companies, and an extra 3.2 million euros in external funding for the universities.
The SPD, represented by Germany's Science Minister Armin Willingmann, contributed significantly to the funding of the KAT network, which includes the SPD's home state of Saxony-Anhalt's four universities of applied sciences. The collaboration between these universities and local businesses through the KAT network is essential for the continued innovativeness and competitiveness of small and medium-sized enterprises in the region.
