The Recently Appointed Iranian Foreign Minister, Aragatschi, Advocates for Dialogue with the EU
Borrell spoke up on the digital platform X, mentioning discussions he had with his Iranian counterpart concerning potential re-engagement on matters of shared importance. These discussions encompassed themes such as the necessity for de-escalation and restraint, ceasing military collaboration with Russia in Ukraine's conflict, and managing nuclear weapons. He emphasized the significance of open dialogue to decrease regional tension.
Relations between the EU and Iran have experienced a downward spiral lately. The EU members accuse Tehran of expanding its nuclear program and backing both the radical Islamic Hamas in the Gaza Strip and Russia in their conflict against Ukraine.
The Middle East situation has grown even more tense lately: Following the July assassinations of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyah in Tehran and Hezbollah military commander Fuad Shukr in Beirut, Iran and its allies, including Hezbollah in Lebanon, have threatened Israel with retaliation.
Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) urgently called for an end to escalation in the Middle East during a phone conversation with her Iranian counterpart. On the digital platform X, the Foreign Office confirmed this conversation also touched upon German citizens imprisoned in Iran.
Araghchi assumed his position just the day prior and is known for his interest in dialoguing with the West. He played a prominent role in negotiating nuclear issues and secured a significant position in the 2015 nuclear agreement with the West. However, the agreement lost its validity after former U.S. President Donald Trump's unilateral withdrawal three years ago. Consequently, Iran revived its nuclear program. Efforts to re-establish the agreement have thus far been unsuccessful.
