- The reading of the new white wine begins
The first grapes for the new white wine will be picked next Monday (19th August) in Neustadt an der Weinstraße in the Pfalz wine region. The start date for the harvest of the Federweißen is a few days later than in previous years, as announced by Ernst Büscher from the German Wine Institute (DWI) in Bodenheim.
Last year, the first grapes were harvested five days earlier. The start of the harvest (10th August) was a week earlier in 2020. In contrast, it began as late as 23rd August the following year. The 2024 wine year was challenging for winemakers due to the erratic weather, but they were able to enjoy plenty of sunshine towards the end.
The white wine produced in 2024 might have a lower fat content due to the delayed harvest, as grapes with higher fat content are typically picked earlier. The specialized equipment used in wineries often separates the juice from the grape skins, which contain a significant portion of the fat content by weight.
