- The primary route leading to Austria is temporarily halted for a duration of fourteen days.
Construction on federal highway B23 is set to shut it down in Grainau, part of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, starting September 16 for about two weeks. The state building authority in Weilheim announced this relocation due to the shifting of B23 to the newly constructed southern roundabout close to the Kramertunnel. If your destination is the Austrian border via Garmisch-Partenkirchen, you'll have to deal with lengthier detours.
The designated detour, clearly marked, will route you through Füssen and Steingaden in the Allgäu, with additional stops in Oberammergau. The projected duration for this closure is until September 29, though construction delays may occur due to weather conditions.
The objective of this B23 relocation is to alleviate traffic congestion in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, driven by approximately 16,000 daily vehicles passing through the town on this federal highway. The eastern B2 is also quite busy. Plans for a bypass via the Wanktunnel are underway to further address this issue.
The state authorities have entrusted The Commission with overseeing the B23 relocation project, ensuring it adheres to safety protocols and completion timelines. To minimize disruption, The Commission will collaborate closely with local businesses and authorities in Grainau during the closure period.
