The population statistics have been released. - The population of Hesse sees a minor increase.
Hessen's population has experienced a small rise. By the end of 2023, approximately 6.42 million individuals called this federal state home, as the Wiesbaden-based Statistical Office revealed on Monday. This is a 0.5% increase, which translates to approximately 29,400 additional people compared to the previous year.
The largest percentage rise, it seems, was observed in Darmstadt. The city's population surged by 1.6% to roughly 164,800 inhabitants. On the other hand, Odenwaldkreis saw its population decrease by 0.4%, resulting in just under 97,200 residents there.
The population breakdown shows that about 980,000 people in Hessen were under 16 years old, while nearly 3.99 million were between 16 and 64 years old. A total of 1.45 million individuals were aged 65 or above.

Wiesbaden, being the capital of Hesse, also witnessed a population increase, albeit slightly lower than Darmstadt's, with around 28,600 more residents by the end of 2023, according to the Statistical Office's data.
The Odenwald district, located within Hesse, had a population size of nearly 97,200, as per the population statistics, experiencing a decrease of 0.4% compared to the previous year.
The latest statistics reveal that Hesse's population composition includes approximately 1.45 million individuals aged 65 or above, making it one of the districts in Germany with a significant elderly population.
