- "The period of this particular occasion has drawn to a close"
Strandkorb rentals along Schleswig-Holstein's Baltic Sea shore share mixed sentiments about the 2024 summer period. "May and June were hit or miss weather-wise, which undeniably affected our income," shared Marcus Bade, chairperson of the state association for strandkorb renters, with dpa. "However, July and August turned out alright overall."
The daily cost to rent a strandkorb on the Baltic Sea varies between 11 and 17 euros. "Tourists typically don't let the prices deter them," mentioned Bade. "But day-trippers have a different perspective. They often opt out of the strandkorb or move to the outskirts where the baskets are more affordable compared to the city center." As per Bade, over the last five years, the price of these baskets has risen by an average of 20 to 30 percent. "But our expenses have also escalated during this timeframe," he added.
The state association has approximately 120 members along Schleswig-Holstein's Baltic Sea shore, according to Bade. Notably, on the North Sea coast and North Frisian Islands, the baskets are usually managed by the local municipalities, according to him.
Despite the weather-related challenges in the beginning of the 2024 summer season, traversing into July and August brought a sense of normalcy for strandkorb rentals along Schleswig-Holstein's Baltic Sea shore. However, the rising cost of renting a strandkorb during these summer months, driven by an average increase of 20 to 30 percent over the past five years, could start becoming a concern for day-trippers during the summer season.
