Lawmakers in the Saarland parliament are largely supportive of easing back on needless bureaucracy, but they don't all agree on how to tackle the problem. Stephan Toscani, leader of the opposition CDU, voiced his concerns on Wednesday, labeling the current level of bureaucracy as "excessive," with citizens bearing the brunt. He urged the government to swiftly and noticeably cut red tape.

However, a resolution aiming to do just that was turned down by the absolute SPD majority in the legislative body. Sandra Quinten, an MP for the Social Democrats, explained that a steering committee had already been set up to offer suggestions for reducing bureaucracy. She suggested waiting for these recommendations before taking action. In addition, the state government is organizing a conference where de-bureaucratization will be the sole topic. "This government is fully committed to championing the reduction of bureaucracy," she said. "We prefer calculated actions over rushed, constitutionally questionable ones."

In recent times, attempts to eliminate bureaucracy haven't achieved what one might call satisfactory results, according to Toscani. This has even become a disadvantage for the economy, he argued. Firms have to dedicate too much time, resources, and personnel to fulfill their administrative tasks, which are imposed upon them by the authorities. Toscani, therefore, advocated for speeding up the planning and approval processes. If a location fails to respond within a predetermined timeframe, the project could be considered automatically approved. Furthermore, all laws should be examined for their feasibility and the administrative burden they carry prior to enactment.
