In 2023, car thieves in Thuringia swiped approximately 150 insured vehicles, leading to an economic loss of around 2.5 million euros. As per the German Insurance Association (GDV), the theft count was higher than the 142 vehicles reported stolen in 2022, totaling around 2.9 million euros.
The increase in car thefts in Thuringia was roughly 6%, contrasting the 20% average nationwide. Across Germany, there were 14,585 insured vehicles stolen last year, resulting in an economic loss exceeding 310 million euros.
On a statistical note, one car theft happened for every 10,000 insured vehicles in Thuringia. Nationwide, this statistic dropped to one in 2,500 cars. GDV CEO Jörg Asmussen noted, "Thuringia continues to be one of the secure states for car owners, sharing this title with Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, and Rhineland-Palatinate." Conversely, the highest risk of theft was found in Berlin.
The average payout for a stolen vehicle in Thuringia was €16,900, while nationwide, it reached €21,400.
