Political gatherings - The opposition calls for a committee meeting focusing on university medicine.

The hunt for a new scientific director for the University Medical Center of Mainz is set to keep the science committee of the Rhineland-Palatinate Parliament busy. Opposition groups CDU and Free Voters have called for a special meeting, as announced by the Union faction in Mainz on Tuesday. This session will take place on Wednesday next week (June 5th at 2 PM).

In the recent past, the Faculty Council didn't approve of the Supervisory Board's proposal to appoint Julia Weinmann-Menke, the ex-boss of the Department of Nephrology, Rheumatology, and Transplantation Medicine at Unimedizin, to the post. The motive behind the rejection remains unclear. Minister of Science Clemens Hoch (SPD) from the Supervisory Board described it as a wasted chance to positively influence the University Medical Center's successful comeback in Mainz.

Currently, Hansjörg Schild, the acting scientific director, will retain his position. The long-time incumbent, Ulrich Förstermann, resigned in late March, and the intended successor from Jena retracted his acceptance in November.

The Faculty Council does not trust the Minister, said CDU members Matthias Reuber, Marion Schneid, and Gerd Schreiner. They believe the Unimedizin's comeback is getting delayed, and the search for a substitute has started anew. Free Voters deputy head Helge Schwab voiced similar concerns, opining that the struggles to find a suitable candidate may affect the scientific reputation of Rhineland-Palatinate in general and the Unimedizin in particular.
