The National Council of Students presents a basic programme

Democracy formation, student participation and mental health: A lot needs to change at Lower Saxony's schools, finds the state student council.

- The National Council of Students presents a basic programme

Just after the start of the new school year, the State Student Council (LSR) presented its fundamental program. Particularly important, according to the chairman Matteo Feind in Hannover, is democratic education in schools. It is of central importance for the development of mature citizens. The paper contains a total of eight points.

An overview of what the LSR demands

Democratic Education: Students must learn to understand and actively exercise their rights and duties in a democracy. Therefore, democratic education should be included in the curriculum for all grade levels.Student Participation: To make children and young people feel taken seriously, it is important to involve them in school life; for example, in general conferences and school councils.Digitalization: "Media competence is nowhere to be found in the classroom," it is said. The LSR demands, among other things, modern devices in classrooms and a digital learning platform.Future: The school system has hardly changed in 100 years. Frontal teaching is no longer up-to-date. Instead, students should be prepared for life.Educational Justice: The LSR wants free lunch for all students, the reintroduction of learning material freedom, and the abolition of copying fees.Student Transportation: "Buses sometimes only run at inappropriate times or the train is delayed again," the LSR criticizes. This must change. Furthermore, the journey to school should not cost any money.Mental Health: Topics such as stress management and mindfulness must be discussed in class. Moreover, there is a need for rest rooms.Well-being: Schools as places where students like to stay and are motivated to continue developing - that's what the LSR wants. For this, among other things, classes should be reduced in size.

Student numbers have increased again

In April, the LSR board was newly elected for two years. Initially, according to the chairman Feind, the points of democratic education and student participation are in focus. For other topics, such as smaller classes, more time is needed.

More than 840,000 students started the new school year on Monday - around 19,000 more than the previous year.

The basic programme presented by the LSR emphasizes the inclusion of democratic education in the curriculum for all grade levels, as it equips students with the knowledge and skills to understand and exercise their rights and duties in a democracy. In line with this focus, it would be beneficial to incorporate student participation in school life, such as in general conferences and school councils, to ensure they feel valued and heard.
