Football: A popular sport involving two teams competing to score more goals than each other. - The Munich Arena dons rainbow hues for two days during the European Championships.
During the European Football Championship this year, on June 22nd and 23rd, the Munich Arena will be bathed in a rainbow of colors. This special event is to commemorate the celebration of Christopher Street Day in Munich, Bavaria's capital. The organizers of the European Football Championship have confirmed this to German Press Agency. Interestingly, no football matches will be held in Munich on these two days.
Remember, during the European Football Championship three years ago, there was a big controversy over the idea of lighting up the Munich Arena with rainbow colors. This was for the third group match against Hungary. The European Football Union turned down Munich's request, citing the political background for their decision. At the time, there was a law in Hungary that restricted the rights of young people to access information related to homosexuality and transsexuality.
The rainbow flag symbolises the acceptance and equal rights of people who don't conform to traditional notions of gender or sexuality. The idea of lighting up the stadium was seen as a protest against this Hungarian law, and also as a snub against the Hungarian team and their fans. UEFA, the governing body of European football, didn't agree with this political angle.
In total, there are six matches slated in Munich for this European Football Championship. These include the opening match between Germany and Scotland on Friday. There are three group matches on June 17th, 20th and 25th, as well as an eighth final on June 2nd and a semi-final on July 9th. Germany will be playing against Hungary on June 19th, but this will happen in Stuttgart and not Munich.
