Traffic - The most important rail construction sites in the southwest in 2024

Rail customers in Baden-Württemberg will once again have to prepare for one or two major construction sites in 2024. The Riedbahn will be renovated, the obstacle course for rail customers on the Gäubahn will continue and the expansion of the digital hub in Stuttgart will also have a major impact. Here is an overview of the most important construction sites in the coming year:

Gäubahn

Construction work on the Gäubahn between Stuttgart and Singen will continue at the beginning of the year: from January 8 to the end of March, there will be major disruptions here because, among other things, the section between Horb and Neckarhausen is being widened to two tracks.

So far, the following restrictions have been announced for the period from January 8 to the end of February: On long-distance services, the Stuttgart-Singen-Zurich IC line between Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof and Oberndorf(Neckar) will be canceled; replacement buses will run between Böblingen and Oberndorf (Neckar) with stops in Horb and Sulz (Neckar). From January 8 to 14, 2024, the buses will start or end in Stuttgart-Vaihingen. From Oberndorf (Neckar), trains in the direction of Zurich will run every hour as usual.

According to Deutsche Bahn, regional trains on the RE14 line between Böblingen and Herrenberg and between Eutingen im Gäu and Rottweil will be canceled. Deutsche Bahn is operating buses for passengers between Böblingen and Herrenberg and between Eutingen im Gäu and Horb.

However, there will also be disruptions to the S-Bahn as a result of the expansion. Due to the work on the Würm Viaduct, the line between Ehningen and Gärtringen will be closed for the entire period from January 8 to February 29, 2024, a railroad spokeswoman added. Trains will also run at least every half hour on all remaining S-Bahn connections for the entire period.

Stuttgart S-Bahn

During the summer vacation, S-Bahn users in Stuttgart will once again have to be patient. For the fourth time, the main line between the stations Hauptbahnhof (deep) and Vaihingen will be closed, as Deutsche Bahn also announced. The installation of modern control and safety technology is planned for the period from July 27 to September 7. As in previous years, replacement buses will also be running. The line between Stuttgart Airport/Messe and Filderstadt will also be closed to train traffic for the expansion to the Stuttgart digital hub.

As part of the Stuttgart 21 rail project, the Stuttgart region is to be developed into Germany's first digitalized rail hub by the end of 2025. Long-distance and regional trains as well as suburban trains will then run with the digital train control system ETCS. The signal boxes are also to be digitized. Deutsche Bahn hopes that the digital system will improve safety and also increase capacity.

Rhine Valley Railway

Deutsche Bahn is expanding the Rhine Valley Railway between Karlsruhe and Basel to four tracks. A three-week closure between Rastatt and Baden-Baden is planned for the project in August 2024

Riedbahn

The busy Riedbahn between Frankfurt and Mannheim is undergoing a general overhaul. Long-distance, regional and freight traffic will be affected. The consequences will affect traffic in three federal states, including Hesse, Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate. Passengers will have to be prepared for canceled trains, replacement bus services and delays.

The first phase will last three weeks, followed by a five-month full closure from the middle of the year. The Frankfurt am Main - Mannheim railroad line will be closed from January 1 to 22 for the extensive construction work, the spokesperson announced. During the three-week closure in January, Deutsche Bahn will continue the installation work for the new electronic interlocking along the entire route. In addition, foundations for the new noise barriers, which are being built over a total length of more than 15 kilometers, are planned. Almost 30 points and almost three kilometers of track will also be renewed. According to Deutsche Bahn, overhead line work will also be carried out in various sections.
