For sensitive teeth in particular, it is important not to brush with too much pressure and to use the right toothpaste.

The most cost-effective sensitive toothpaste is the top choice.

Not everyone enjoys the ritual of brushing their teeth, but it's something we all have to do. For those with sensitive teeth, it can be an uncomfortable experience. Sensitive toothpastes are said to bring comfort and tranquility to your mouth, but they don't always live up to their promises. The experts at Warentest were underwhelmed by the results.

Brushing your teeth is essential, whether you use a traditional manual toothbrush or a modern electric one. But what do you put on the bristles? Using the right product is crucial, especially for those with sensitive teeth. These types of toothpastes are designed to clean teeth, protect against tooth decay, and reduce sensitivity. Warentest tested 21 sensitive varieties from different sources, priced between 0.85 and 8 euros per 100 milliliters (ml).

The outcome was rather poor. Only five toothpastes received an overall rating of "good." The majority were either "satisfactory" or "sufficient." This was often due to the pastes failing to simultaneously clean gently and effectively remove discoloration.

Teeth cleaners wear teeth down

Cleaning agents in toothpastes play an important role in removing discoloration caused by food and other factors. Depending on the type and quantity, these agents can scrub the teeth clean. This process, known as abrasion, varies among different toothpastes. Choosing one with low abrasion is crucial for individuals with exposed tooth necks. Otherwise, their sensitive dentin is exposed to the cleaning agents without any protection. This kind of damage is usually caused by incorrect brushing technique. Around one in four Germans suffer from this issue.

Four toothpastes exhibited average abrasion levels. These included those from Meridol, Parodontax, Oral-B, and Elmex Sensitive. However, this does not align with the claims of these sensitive products, which tout gentle cleaning. Consequently, they were rated "sufficient" for their declarations and marketing claims, but overall, they were "satisfactory."

Some pastes contain titanium dioxide, a white colorant that has come under scrutiny due to recent research suggesting it could damage genetic material. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has classified it as unsafe. Warentest advises against using toothpastes with this ingredient.

Two affordable winners sporting just 0.68 and 0.71 euros each

Apart from avoiding titanium dioxide, it's important that your toothpaste contains fluoride. This ingredient strengthens tooth enamel, preventing tooth decay. Its benefits are well-documented - fluoride helps repair minerals to the tooth surface and remineralize it.

The two best toothpastes can be found at low prices in drugstores and discount stores. The Prokudent Sensitive toothpaste from Rossmann costs 0.71 euros, while the Eurodont Sensitive special toothpaste gentle and gentle from Aldi costs only 0.68 euros (each per 100 ml). The other three good toothpastes are much more expensive.
