The Monetary Fund authorizes an 800-million-dollar loan for Argentina.
"More positive developments" is how Milei viewed the news. Earlier, the national statistics agency reported that the inflation rate in May had fallen to 4.2% - the lowest in over two years.
Milei, a right-wing populist and self-proclaimed "Anarcho-Capitalist," had pushed for severe measures to control Argentina's spiraling inflation and stimulate the economy. His actions included devaluing the Argentine Peso and slashing state subsidies. Regular protests against his policies were common. There were even incidents of injuries during a Wednesday demonstration.
On Thursday, the Senate in Buenos Aires approved Milei's reform plan. This includes a one-year "economic emergency" status, which would allow the president to eliminate positions and privatize state companies. Pensions are also set to be reduced, and labor rights are being restricted. The bills need to be approved by the Chamber of Deputies next.
The original reform package was nearly three times as vast but was scaled down to secure Senate approval. Milei's party doesn't have a majority in both congressional chambers, making this the first successful legislative initiative for the government since December.
