Explosions at ATMs - The Minister advocates for enhanced safety precautions.
The occurrence of ATM explosions hasn't vanished; instead, it's shifted to other federal states, according to the minister. Therefore, she deems it necessary to boost penalties. "Each incident is one too many, and it demonstrates that these culprits are becoming more ruthless, intentionally placing innocent individuals in harm's way," the minister shared. Since 2023, 27 suspects have been detained.
In Lower Saxony, the number of ATM explosions has significantly dwindled in the initial five months of this year in comparison to the previous duration. As of May 21, 2024, the police documented nine occurrences, as revealed on Sunday. Compared to the prior year, 2023, there were 18 such incidents. In the whole year 2022, 68 events transpired in Lower Saxony, marking the highest number thus far. As of May 21, 2022, there were already 31 cases.
Behrens attributes the decrease, in part, to the diligent efforts of the investigation authorities and enhanced security systems. The instances were processed and analyzed centrally at police stations and the State Prosecutor's Office in Osnabrück. In addition, a task force was established at the State Criminal Office in 2022.

Despite the decrease in ATM explosions in Lower Saxony, Hanover still experienced one incident recently, causing concerned reactions from local SPD politicians. Daniela Behrens, the Lower Saxony's Interior Minister, spoke out about the importance of maintaining a strong focus on anti-crime initiatives, even after the drop in incidents. She highlighted the need for continuous improvement in security measures at automatic machines to prevent future ATM blasts.
