Migratory movements during the initial six months - The majority of the displaced individuals sought refuge in Uckermark.
Potsdam (dpa/bb) – The Uckermark region in Brandenburg led the way in welcoming refugees during the first half of 2024. By June's end, 470 individuals who had fled their homelands found shelter in this northern district. This information stemmed from a response given by the Integration Ministry in Potsdam, following a query from Left Party state MP Andrea Johlige. Coming in second was Dahme-Spreewald with 436, and third was Barnim with 398.
Markisch-Oderland is predicted to host the most refugees for the entire year, with a staggering 1,648. By mid-year, they'd taken in 246 refugees. This means that Uckermark, with its planned intake of 891 for the year, had practically hit half that mark by the middle of 2024. Dahme-Spreewald expects to take in 1,062 for the year, and Barnim, almost 1,300.
State Government Anticipates Lower Refugee Numbers in 2024
Brandenburg's state government estimates that a total of 11,800 refugees will settle there in 2024. The initial expected number was around 13,950 individuals, but the intake quota for municipalities was reduced in June's beginning. The state government attributes this decrease to the federal government implementing internal border controls at the Polish border. By the end of May, the federal government announced that they'd maintain these controls till mid-December.
Some Municipalities Surpassed Intake Quota in Previous Year
As of now, Frankfurt (Oder) has only accepted 53 refugees. Consequently, their annual intake quota is to be lowered by this very number, as they surpassed their quota in 2023. Additionally, Brandenburg an der Havel is expected to fall short by 33 refugees, but they managed to accommodate 113 new refugees by June's end.
For the district of Ostprignitz-Ruppin, a negative intake figure of 29 is planned for 2024. However, they've already welcomed 110 new refugees during the first half of the year.
By mid-2024, approximately 4,850 refugees have been relocated among the districts and independent cities. In comparison, municipalities welcomed around 12,100 refugees last year, and 38,940 in the year before that.
Despite the reduction in the refugee intake quota, the Uckermark region has demonstrated commendable efforts in migration, having accommodated nearly half of its annual target by mid-2024. The state government's measures, such as the implementation of internal border controls, have influenced the overall refugee arrivals in Brandenburg.
