The lifts are running again: ski season starts in the southwest

Winter sports are not only possible in the Alps on the first weekend of Advent, but also in many places in Baden-Württemberg. It should be worth getting your skis out of the cellar in many places. One day at the weekend will be particularly sunny.

Winter sports - The lifts are running again: ski season starts in the southwest

In many of the country's winter sports resorts, operations start earlier this weekend than they have for a long time. Lift operators are expecting numerous guests, especially in the Black Forest, but also in the Swabian Alb. The snowfall of the past few days has made this possible. For example, around 70 centimetres fell on the highest mountain in Baden-Württemberg, the Feldberg in the Black Forest. In the Holzelfingen ski resort on the Alb, the operators measured up to 30 centimetres of snow.

Several winter sports areas have already started the season this week - such as the Unterstmatt lifts near Bühl in the northern Black Forest or the lifts on Seibelseckle and in Ruhestein. The country's largest ski area on the Feldberg opened to the public on Friday - in fog and snowfall. And yet: "There's already a lot going on. People are keen to go skiing," said Julian Probst, Managing Director of Feldbergbahnen.

Skiing and snowboarding under floodlights should also be possible at some lifts in the state - for example in Hinterzarten (Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald) or in Todtnau (Lörrach district).

The forecast for winter sports weather looks particularly promising for Sunday. Meteorologist Peter Crouse from the German Weather Service (DWD) is expecting a sunny but cold day in many places.

The expert is expecting snowfall on Saturday. The DWD is expecting 10 to 15 centimetres of fresh snow at high altitudes in the Swabian Alb. In the Black Forest, 10 to 20 centimetres are likely to be added. Up to 30 centimetres could even fall in the Allgäu. It will also snow down to the lowlands on Saturday, so there is a good chance of tobogganing in some places.

The meteorologist also has good news for winter sports enthusiasts for the coming week: the snow should remain at high altitudes for the time being.

It will be frosty at the weekend. On Saturday, permafrost is to be expected across the board. Only in the extreme south of the country - at Lake Constance and on the High Rhine - will it be possible for temperatures to rise above zero. The risk of icy conditions should not be underestimated. Where it continues to snow during the day, it could also be dangerous for drivers, said expert Crouse. People should therefore be particularly careful in the south of Baden-Württemberg. It is less dangerous in the north.

The clear skies are also expected to make it frosty cold on Sunday night. The lows are expected to be between minus three and minus eight degrees throughout the state. Towards the Allgäu and at high altitudes above 800 meters, it could get as cold as minus twelve degrees. "The snow won't melt until the beginning of next week," said Crouse.
