Germany's part-time employment has reached a new high, according to the Institute for Employment Research (IAB). In the first quarter of 2024, the part-time rate rose to 39.1%, up by 0.3 percentage points compared to the same period last year. "We've never seen a higher part-time rate in the first quarter," stated Enzo Weber, an expert from IAB in Nuremberg.
As per IAB's estimations, around 4.45 million individuals had two jobs in the first three months of 2024, which is a 2.2% increase from the previous year's quarter. The number of people working multiple jobs has been rising steadily before the pandemic and has now surpassed pre-crisis levels by slightly over 540,000.
The total number of employed individuals in Germany rose slightly to 45.8 million during the same period. However, the average working hours per employee dropped by 0.8% to 344.5 hours. "Individually, people have never worked less, but collectively, they've never worked more," commented Weber.
