"The Legend of Zelda" to come to the movies
The video game success "The Legend of Zelda" from Nintendo is to be made into a movie. US director Wes Ball (43, "Maze Runner") will direct the live-action film adaptation, reported the "Hollywood Reporter".
Following the billion-dollar success of the animated film "Super Mario Bros.", Nintendo is developing the Zelda project together with Sony Pictures Entertainment, it was reported. Nintendo manager and Mario inventor Shigeru Miyamoto posted on X (formerly Twitter) that he had been working on a live-action version of "The Legend of Zelda" for many years. "We have now officially started developing the movie," he wrote. It will still take some time to complete.
Zelda is "a crown jewel of the Nintendo empire, dating back to the first game in 1986", wrote the Hollywood Reporter. The fantasy games tell the story of a boy called Link who must save the kingdom of Hyrule and its princess Zelda.
Wes Ball made his feature film debut as director in 2014 with 'Maze Runner' and also directed the two other 'Maze Runner' films in 2015 and 2018. His next film will be the new "Planet of the Apes" film "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes", which is due to be released in May 2024.
The video game adaptation "Super Mario Bros.", which was released in spring 2023, was a huge success and grossed 1.3 billion US dollars.
After the remarkable success of the animated "Super Mario Bros." movie, Nintendo is venturing into cinema again, this time adapting "The Legend of Zelda" into live-action. With Sony Pictures Entertainment, they are collaborating on this project, aiming to revive the magic of Zelda's world on the big screen. Meanwhile, director Wes Ball, renowned for his work on "Maze Runner" games, is set to bring his gaming-inspired direction to the Cinema adaptation of Zelda.
