The leader of BSW, Wolf, says the outcome will serve as an advantage in upcoming state elections.

The recently formed Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) alliance in Thuringia has achieved a remarkable third-place finish in the European elections, leading Katja Wolf to view this as a significant responsibility for the upcoming state elections.

Upcoming European polls - The leader of BSW, Wolf, says the outcome will serve as an advantage in upcoming state elections.

Thuringia's BSW leader Katja Wolf feels the European election victory will boost her party's chances in the fall state polls. "It's an incredible success, not what I anticipated, but it's terrific for us," Wolf told media in Erfurt on Monday. Left Alliance, led by Sahra Wagenknecht, earned 15% in the European vote in Thuringia and came in third place.

Wolf sees a big role

This victory has placed a sizable burden on her party. They aim to replicate a similar outcome in the September 1st state elections. "It's a big responsibility, but also a boost," Wolf shared. With their growing popularity and servicing as a democratic alternative, people are hopefully looking towards the party for change.

Luring AfD voters?

On the other hand, Wolf acknowledged the promising polls for the upcoming Thuringian state elections giving a strong indication of the previously strong AfD presence. It's uncertain if her party can sway AfD voters back to a more democratic path. "The result of the AfD is not a negative sign," Wolf said. "But I wouldn't mull it over as an indication that it hasn't worked."

The AfD emerged as the dominant power in Thuringia's European elections, obtaining 30.7% of the votes. That's an uptick of 8.2% compared to the previous European elections. However, during the local elections, all AfD aspirants failed - right-wing extremist Björn Höcke's party could not gain more ground, as none of its candidates were able to secure any councilor or mayor position.
