"The Killer": David Fincher's new thriller on Netflix
In David Fincher's new film, the lead actor comments on the action in a voice-over and shares his views on life with the audience. In this way, "The Killer" is reminiscent of Fincher's 1999 cult film "Fight Club", both of which premiered at the Venice Film Festival. Otherwise, Fincher's new work, which is about a contract killer, has a much more straightforward narrative. It starts on Netflix on November 10.
The main actor this time is Michael Fassbender. The Heidelberg-born actor plays an unnamed killer who has to give up his strict philosophy of life in the course of the film. "You are born, live your life and finally die," he explains laconically right at the beginning. "Trust no one" or "forbid yourself empathy" are among his principles.
A killer with strict routines
At the beginning of the film, he hides out in Paris to carry out a contract killing. Dressed as inconspicuously as possible, including a beige fisherman's hat, he explains that he dresses like a German tourist because they are shunned by everyone. He has trained himself to follow strict routines for his work, which Fincher shows in great detail.
After his mission fails, the killer himself becomes the target of an attack. He then goes on a vendetta - and suddenly has to improvise. Tilda Swinton can be seen in a supporting role in the Netflix production.
Fassbender is convincing in "The Killer" as an aloof, ironic anti-hero. He is not a glamorous villain. He keeps his weapons in a mundane storage room, and to break into a house, he orders a key-cutting machine from Amazon. Despite a rather classic story, "The Killer" ends up feeling very contemporary.
